This video is a little long (25 minutes) but well worth the watch because it's extremely inspiring. Dave Eggers' is a writer for a magazine publication. He leased a space in San Francisco where his magazine could be published and with the extra area in the space he opened a tutoring center called 826 Valencia. It started off is a place where local students could go for free writing tutoring from his colleagues at the publication. Now hundreds of volunteers from around the city come to tutor students everyday. The tutoring center has become a space where students can actually publish their writing. The center has also opened tutoring classrooms in some of the local schools for the kids that can't get to the center. Part of its charm and intrigue to students is that there is also a pirate store in the space which sells all types of pirate paraphernalia. You'll see how it all ties in when you watch! Now there are a bunch of 826 tutoring centers popping up in many major cities across the U.S. In Los Angeles the 826 tutoring center goes under the guise of a time travel store, the 826 in Ann Arbor, Michigan goes under the guise of a robot supply store, and the 826 in New York City goes under the guise of the superhero supply store. Johnny Lee Demonstrates Wii Remote Hacks (posted by Amy)
This video is nice and short (5 minutes) and I thought this video was meaningful especially since we are all in the technology field and most of us are teachers. Basically Johnny Lee talks about how to use a wii remote to create an interactive white board out of a projector screen. This is a much cheaper alternative to the high priced Smart Boards that many schools are wanting to purchase but do not necessarily have the funds for. He has developed software that he offers for free on his website which is needed to make the screen interactive. You also need a special markers. From what I gather you can buy the Smart Board markers and use them or he also offers a tutorial on how to create your own Smart Board markers with items that you can buy at your local store. Check it out!
